I chose to watch a podcast about poverty in America. I found the podcast on youtube  here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPuS_Cl_2gc

Insights from the podcast:

  • The Federal Reserve found that 40% of Americans lost their wealth over a 3 year period 2007-2010.
  • Compared to previous recessions the unemployment rate is higher.
  • Unemployment is a problem in America.
  • The poverty rate went up during the recession.
  • Wages at the bottom are a big problem.
  • America’s middle class is shrinking according to the 2010 CENSUS and Nearly half of the population is poor or low income.
  • If you wait until you are 21 to get married and have a baby, you have a smaller chance of being in poverty and low income.
Facts about Childhood Poverty in India:

  1. Tiffany, your fact list about poverty issues in the U.S. was an eye-opener. Anecdotally, I’ve heard about lots of people who have lost wealth over the period of the recession, so the Federal Reserve Statics were not surprising. It was also very sobering to learn about the problem of child labor in India, on top of the incredible poverty in that part of the world. -Susan

  2. Tiffany,

It's crazy when you hear about poverty in different places. Especially when you see many people from other countries come here and open up business that thrives well in our economy. I work with many Indians, Africans, and Asians. In addition when I look around many of Indians, and Asians own businesses. I wonder why so many are able to thrive here and not in their own countries?

  3. Tiffany,
I would have never thought that it was poverty issues in India. Well I learn something new. In the country of India I thought they would have a lot of money. Now I see why a lot of Indians move over to our country in the United States.
